How To Find Your Lost Android Smart Phone Or Prevent It From Getting Lost

Sometime last year, I bought a Tecno Phantom P9, an excellent device if you ask me but I lost it within a month of buying the phone. It was really a bad experienced and I spent quite a few evening researching on how and if it was possible to find the device.

Well. I never found it for a number of reasons we will be discussing later in this article.  But, from what I learnt, I can promise you that I will never lose a smart phone again and even if I do, the thief will have a hard time using the device.

If you just bought a new android smart phone or just lost your smart phone, here are a few steps you can take to either ensure you don’t lose it or you are able to find the one you just lost:

1. Use Google Android Device Manager (ADM): If you just lost your android smart phone, find another internet enabled device or computer, log into your Google account and visit the Google Android Device Manager website.  You will have the option to either ring (if the phone is still close, you will hear it ring) the phone or set up a lock and erase the memory of the phone.

Now, this may not help you to recover the device but it will definitely help in protecting whatever sensitive information or data that you may have on the device. The thief will also have a hard time using the phone.

But, if you have not already lost your smart phone at this point, I’d strongly advice that you visit the Google Android Device Manager website HERE, download the App and provide the required information and you are good to go.      

2. Android Lost: Hopefully, you have not already lost your phone. If this is the case, go to Google Play store and install the android Lost App (from Play Store) and provide the necessary information. In the event that you lose your smart phone, visit the Android Lost website gain remote access to your device and you can do any of the following:

• Lock your phone
• Wipe the memory
• Get the Phone to ring very loudly (in the event that it is still close)
• Get the immediate location of the device (could still be in your locality)
• Take pictures of the environment and possibly the face of the person in possession of the smart phone (in the remote possibility that you know the person)    

NB: You can do all these remotely when you are logged into the Android Lost web site.

But if you have already lost your phone, you can still remotely control your phone if you have a Google account. Here is what to do:

From any other internet enabled device or computer, log into your Google account and visit the Google Play Store from there and remotely download the Android Lost App on your smart phone. Now that Android lost is installed on your device, send an SMS to your phone with the text line “androidlost register”. Your phone will remotely register itself on the Android Lost website.    

Now that you have remote access to your phone, you can also

• Lock your phone
• Wipe the memory
• Get the Phone to ring very loudly (in the event that it is still close)
• Get the immediate location of the device (could still be in your locality)
• Take pictures of the environment and possibly the face of the person in possession of the smart phone (in the remote possibility that you know the person)    

The recurring decimals in all the above is that:

• You have a Google Account (Gmail) registered on your mobile device
• Your Phone is connected to the internet at the time you are trying to locate it.

If any of the two above is not true, then there is little you can do.  

Take these precautionary steps if you are yet to lose your device:

• Get a Google Account(Gmail) and register your phone with it
• Download and install Google Android Device Manager From Play Store
• Download and Install Android Lost on your smart phone (From Play Store)
• Install some other AndroidTracking App (Visit Play Store)
• And please hold on tight to your device.
